How To Find a Customer in a Divided IT Universe
The last few years have seen a significant shift in the locus of innovation, which is having a meaningful impact on emerging vendors and startups. It used to be, if we wanted to talk to cutting edge users, we went to CTOs on Wall Street. Today, much of the most interesting technical innovation is taking place inside the largest scale web properties and cloud providers. The scale at which these companies are operating is forcing them to push the limits, rethink, and in many cases rebuild almost every layer of the technology stack.
iPad Quick Tip: Enabling Multiple Google Calendars
I recently set out to enable Google Calendar syncing with the iPad Calendar and found some of the online documentation on this subject to be a bit out of date. After digging around, I found that you can set up and sync multiple Google Calendars from within the native Calendar App on the iPad without ever needing to use your computer.
Quite different from iOS 4, iOS 3.2 does not yet support calendars with your Gmail account. Instead, you need to set up a CalDAV account.
To do this on the iPad, open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap on Add Account…, then select Other and choose Add CalDAV Account from the list of choices under the Calendars list.
Apple TV is Dead; Long Live Apple TV
Over the last few months, there’ve been several articles written about the possibility of a future update to the Apple TV based on iOS, the operating system used in iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. These rumors have taken on a life of their own on the Internet, in large part because everyone desperately wants them to be true.
The iTunes Store is a Dead End for Video
Apple sits in an enviable position in the smartphone market, has pushed the tablet category into the mainstream consciousness, and its Mac lineup is selling like hotcakes. It’s the king of music retailing as well, but movies and TV have been somewhat anemic. The iTunes store does not have the dominant position with video content that it does with music. The slow buildup of the video category has led Steve Jobs to refer to the Apple TV as a hobby: something for Apple to continue to dabble in while the market matures.
Google's New "Chrome to Phone" Service Should Be on Every Phone
Google announced a new app and Chrome browser extension this morning called Chrome to Phone. It's a great-looking little system that lets you click one button in your browser and send links, maps, currently selected text, YouTube videos and phone numbers to your Android device running Android 2.2 or later.
Why doesn't every phone in the world offer this? That would sure make sense to me. Dear extension developers, would someone please build this for the iPhone? I'd also love to see Instapaper integration into a service like this, even the equivalent for multimedia like videos. Imagine one click on the desktop browser sending a downloaded video to your phone. That would be cool, but the feature as it's launched today is pretty cool already.
