iOS 4 Now Available to Download
Apple’s mobile operating system update, iOS 4, is now available to download via iTunes.
The updated operating system, previously known as the iPhone OS, features more than 100 new features. However, in order to download the 378MB update, you will need the latest version of iTunes (version 9.2), so be sure you are all up to speed before trying to upgrade.
Apple’s Small Problem: iOS 4 And iPhone 4 One-Up The iPad
The tech world is buzzing about iOS 4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system that Apple released today. And rightly so — it’s an improvement over the previous version in every way. In fact, once you’ve been using it for a while, it’s hard to go back to using iPhone OS 3.x. And there’s an unfortunate casualty there: the iPad.
I’ve been using developer builds of iOS 4 (then called iPhone OS 4) for weeks now. I’ve grown very used to using things such as the new app switcher and folders. In fact, I’ve grown so used to using them that when I switch back over to the iPad now (running iPhone OS 3.2), I can’t help but feel that it in some ways seems antiquated. Yes, I know that’s ridiculous for a device that’s not even three months old yet. But the feeling lingers.
New iPhone Software Arrives Today - Can You Run it?
Ahead of Thursday's release of the new and improved iPhone 4, Apple is today launching a series of software improvements collectively known as iOS 4 to owners of older generation iPhones and iPod Touch devices. iOS 4, the updated form of the iPhone operating system, brings over 100 new features, some big - like folders for apps and unified inboxes - some small - like home screen wallpapers and threaded email - and some - like multi-tasking - which your old iPhone may not be able
iPhone's New "FaceTime" Video Calls are Free
Looking to save money on your wireless bill? Have the new iPhone? Maybe you should start making video calls instead. With this week's launch of the new iPhone 4 and its accompanying software, the Apple smartphone now enables a video calling feature by way of a new application called "FaceTime." And apparently, these videos calls, unlike their voice counterparts, are free.
Loopt Brings Background Location to the iPhone
It looks like the first runner has crossed the finish line in the race to bringing background location functionality to the iPhone, and the winner is Loopt, an early entry in the location-based services arena.
Aside from multitasking (or pseudo-multitasking, if you will) and those helpful organizer folders, background location was one of the most anticipated features of iOS 4, and Loopt clearly shows us why - even though it's just the tip of the background-location iceberg.
Facebook Videos Now Viewable on iPhone
When the popular iPhone application for Facebook got a dramatic refresh last summer, lead designer Joe Hewitt said that the inability to view Facebook videos was a real disappointment. This weekend that changed, and Facebook iPhone users now have a very nice experience viewing videos on their mobile devices.
A quiet update to the application on Friday fixed a number of small bugs but the biggest change was the introduction of video. Facebook sees 2 billion video views each month, which is the same number YouTube sees every single day.
