2 Reasons Today’s Verizon iPhone Rumor Are Likely True

Verizon Wireless will reportedly offer Apple’s iPhone in January of 2011, after AT&T’s exclusivity deal ends, writes Bloomberg, which cites two unnamed people familiar with the plans. Verizon has so far been unable to offer Apple’s popular smartphone, despite pent-up demand among its 92 million subscribers. But although there have been numerous Verizon iPhone rumors in the past — many we skipped over — this particular one rings true, for two reasons.

iPhone 4 + Verizon + January = Boom?

This is it, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Well, maybe.

A report today in Bloomberg citing two unnamed sources claims that Verizon Wireless will be getting the iPhone in January. Yes, Verizon, iPhone, January. Naturally, all the companies involved are declining to comment on the record, but Bloomberg sounds pretty confident in the report thanks to their two sources “familiar with the plans.”

This information is close to what the Wall Street Journal was reporting back in March which stated that a CDMA (the type of network Verizon uses) iPhone would be entering production later this year to be released at some point after that. There have been many earlier reports as well. Some dating back years — and some of those may have very well been negotiating tactics by Apple to score a better deal when re-upping with AT&T.

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate for AT&T

I can’t say much about the Galaxy S Captivate that hasn’t been said, other than to inform you that this ultra-slim Android phone is amazingly small, light, and very exciting. Styled like the EVO 4G but running on AT&T, the phone features 16GB internal storage and a 1GHz processor. The model I saw was production-ready and ran Android 2.2.

iPhone 4: First Impressions

iPhone day 2010 has come and gone — and so has the world’s iPhone 4 inventory. If you haven’t gotten your hands on one yet, give it a few days (or weeks, if things keep up this way) and chances are you too will have a chance to pick one up.

In the meantime, several of us here at TheAppleBlog have gotten our sweaty mitts on the new iPhone 4, and have had a chance to jot down some impressions after a few days with the new hardware. Perhaps you’ll find the following helpful in making the decision to purchase Apple’s new mobile phone.

1.7M iPhone 4′s Sold in First Weekend; Most Successful Apple Product Launch Ever

Apple announced today that it has already sold more than 1.7 million new iPhones in the first three days of the device being on sale. That’s a record among Apple’s own product launches, and I’d guess that it might be some kind of record for the industry at large.

Remember also that the iPhone 4 is only available for sale in five countries so far, including Britain, France, Germany, Japan and the U.S. Even with the limited initial launch, Apple had trouble keeping the iPhone in stock and shortages caused crowds to become disgruntled at multiple locations.

Despite Glitches, iPhone 4 is Apple's Biggest Launch Ever

Apple announced this morning that it has sold over 1.7 million units of the new iPhone 4 smartphone through Saturday, only three days after its launch on June 24. These numbers, touts the Cupertino-based company, make the iPhone 4 launch the "most successful in Apple's history."

Oddly enough, it's also the launch that seems to have had the most technical issues as well, like, for instance, the antenna reception problems Apple confirmed both officially and unofficially last week. Holding the phone in a particular way leads to a weakened signal and sometimes even dropped calls, according to numerous reports from new users, testers, gadget blogs and mainstream media news outlets.

Kindle App for iPhone, iPad Now Does Audio and Video

But this is only the beginning, says Amazon. "We look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create...using the new functionality," said Dorothy Nicholls, director of Amazon's Kindle unit.

Chrome Surpasses Safari in U.S.

Internet users in the U.S. have finally caught up with the rest of the world in their browser choice today, with Google's Chrome taking over third place from default Apple browser Safari. The browser, first released just two years ago, has led Safari worldwide since last September, but just this week surpassed it in the U.S. as well, according to Internet traffic analytics company StatCounter.

For some, this is seen as a big win for Google over Apple, as the two companies battle over the search and mobile spheres.

iPhone 4: Pros & Cons After a Weekend of Tinkering

I was one of the lucky few that managed to secure a pre-ordered phone, but wasn't able to get it shipped to my home. Instead, I woke up and the crack of dawn and stood in line for several hours to get my iPhone 4 - meeting several great people during the process. The Potential Health Risks of Multitouch Devices

Multitouch user input is the current “latest big thing” in mobile computing. With the runaway popularity of Apple’s iPhone and iPad, and the company’s pioneering multitouch laptop trackpads now being busily copied across the industry, some suggest that multitouch devices will soon displace the traditional mouse.

However, revolutions in user input technology can result in unforeseen consequences, an emblematic example being the spike in repetitive stress injury that resulted from the switch from traditional “springy,” raked typewriter keyboards to flatter, often “clicky,” and frequently hard-landing, computer keyboards back in the ’80s.

Apple’s callous response to iPhone 4 defect matched only by its fanboys’ blind dedication

What’s more sad: the very fact that the iPhone 4 is completely unusable if you’re left-handed—President Obama is left-handed!— or that Apple fanboys are doing everything in their power to divert attention away from the issue? Check MacRumors. It’s a fine site, yes, and one I read every day, but to call it an “Apple fan site” would be like calling the Sun hot. “Upset that your brand new iPhone 4 doesn’t work? Don’t be: other phones do this, too!” Because that’s what you want to hear: your phone may be a piece of junk, but so is the other guy’s phone, so it all works out. Um, no. It doesn’t work like that.

iOS update to ship early next week, fix death grip issue?

I’ll believe this when I see it: there are reports that the death grip phenomenon is actually the result of a software error. I’d heard this going around yesterday, but the more specific issue seems to be that the device goes to no signal mode when it should just be switching frequencies. And holding the phone in the “wrong” position aggravates this tendency.

Google Activates Android "Kill Switch," Zaps Useless Apps

This week the engineers at Google remotely activated the so-called Android "kill switch," a technology that allows the company to remotely remove applications installed on users' phones. They were not used maliciously nor did they access private data, or so says Android Security Lead Rich Cannings in a company blog post. How to Jailbreak iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3G

Apple has released its latest iPhone operating system, iOS 4.0, and just as quickly, the hacker community has managed to jailbreak it. For the uninitiated, "jailbreaking" refers to the ability to open up a device in order to install unapproved, third-party applications. Given both AT&T and Apple's restrictions regarding the iPhone, this process is a must for many Apple device owners.

Jailbreaking allows for a plethora of new features, including turning the phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, being able to fully customize the phone down to its icons and forcing Wi-Fi only apps to run over 3G. For those whose older devices don't support all of iOS 4's new features, jailbreaking offers some viable alternatives.

Jailbreaking iOS 4.0? How To Keep a Jailbreak For iPhone 3G or 3GS

But there's a second tool called "sn0wbreeze," which does. This software also supports jailbreaking the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch second generation. However, sn0wbreeze is a Windows-only tool and even more importantly, it is meant just for devices which have already been jailbroken. If you upgraded to the new iOS 4.0, you cannot use sn0wbreeze.

Organizing Apps in iOS 4

iOS 4 brings an entirely new way to organize apps on the iPod touch and iPhone. Previously, the only organization available was to separate the apps on different pages and flick between them. After a few pages of apps, it became much harder to find the one you were looking for.

Spotlight search helped somewhat, but I always found it a bit awkward, and not as fast as memorizing where the apps were.

Apple Delays Availability of White iPhone

Today, Apple released a press statement announcing that it is delaying shipments of the white iPhone 4 until late July.

White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.I have a feeling that the manufacture may not have been precisely more challenging, but that the color of the finished product may not have been up to the standards of Steve Jobs when he held one in his hand. I don’t have any inside information on this, purely speculation, but I could imagine him saying, “Not good enough, send it back and redo it.”

Apple’s Small Problem: iOS 4 And iPhone 4 One-Up The iPad

The tech world is buzzing about iOS 4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system that Apple released today. And rightly so — it’s an improvement over the previous version in every way. In fact, once you’ve been using it for a while, it’s hard to go back to using iPhone OS 3.x. And there’s an unfortunate casualty there: the iPad.

I’ve been using developer builds of iOS 4 (then called iPhone OS 4) for weeks now. I’ve grown very used to using things such as the new app switcher and folders. In fact, I’ve grown so used to using them that when I switch back over to the iPad now (running iPhone OS 3.2), I can’t help but feel that it in some ways seems antiquated. Yes, I know that’s ridiculous for a device that’s not even three months old yet. But the feeling lingers.
