As Gingerbread Bakes, 73.8% of Android Phones Run 2.1+
Indeed, I saw the handwriting on the wall in May as Google began to build apps that were supported on multiple Android versions and then provide them outside the operating system. Software such as Goggles, Gesture Search and Navigation originally launched on Android 2.0 or better devices, but quickly appeared on older Android 1.6 handsets. Based on the distribution of Android versions at that time (shown below), Google effectively doubled the potential user base of such apps by offering them phones running an older version of Android.
The adoption of newer Android versions comes at a time when the next iteration is likely to appear. Developers should see the SDK of Gingerbread as early as next week, says
Apple Stock Climbs Above $300
Apple’s stock price reached a lofty milestone in pre-market trading early this morning, crossing the $300 mark for the first time in company history. It reached as high as $301.50, and remains above $300 (as of this post time) after opening bell today.
During the course of the past year, Apple’s stock price has experienced 40 percent growth, based mostly on the strength of the iPad’s success in bolstering its already strong sales of iOS devices. Compared to the overall NASDAQ average growth of only 1.2 percent, Apple’s success is meteoric.

Apple will do what they often do this time of year, and that’s hold a press event unveiling Mac updates. The event is called “Back to the Mac,” which is an acknowledgement that Apple’s focus has seemed to be elsewhere of late (iOS, in case you hadn’t noticed). But the teaser image reveals we could see more than just new hardware.
The official invite sports what’s clearly the image of a lion peeking out from behind an Apple logo-shaped cutout. Does that mean we’ll be seeing a new iteration of OS X, major point upgrades of which are codenamed after big cats? In short, yes. Apple will probably announce OS X 10.7, possibly codenamed “Lion” at this event. It’s hard to interpret that photo in any other way.
Mobile Barcode Scanning up 700% This Year
ShopSavvy, BarcodeHero, Stickybits, CheckPoints, Tecca, Microsoft Tag, RedLaser, SnapTell, Shopkick, the recently updated Amazon Mobile - if you're like many smartphone owners, you've used at least one (if not more) of these mobile barcode scanning applications. In fact, you're now part of a growing trend of users who do.
According to a new consumer adoption study from barcode technology provider ScanBuy, barcode scanning is up 700% in 2010.
ScanBuy, makers of 2D barcode scanning solutions, recently released a report on its own platform data. Although the report doesn't look at usage beyond the company's own technology, ScanBuy is one of the industry leaders in barcode scanning. Its ScanLife technology platform has been deployed by handset makers in the U.S. Mexico, Chile, Spain, Italy and Denmark and its mobile application is pre-loaded on a number devices from LG, Motorola, Nokia, Pantech, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Although not always beloved by the barcoding community due to its use of proprietary EZcodes, due to its size, it's a company whose trends are worth watching.
New Apps for Your Smartphone, October Edition
There are some 225,000 mobile applications for the iPhone now and 70,000 for Android, so every so often we like to highlight a few that have caught our attention. This latest edition of our favorite smartphone apps includes a few in testing, a few we're madly in love with, some notable updates and some you may not have even heard of yet.
New & Awesome
Instagram (iPhone): OK, we're dubbing this one the "app of the month." Initially called Burbn, the original app was transformed into Instagram, a photo-sharing service and image editor. With a number of built-in filters, you can turn your iPhone photos into more attractive and interesting versions of themselves, then share them either publicly or privately with fellow app users. Your friends' photos are in a section called "Feed" and the most popular photos from across Instagram are found in the "Popular" section. While what Instagram is doing is not revolutionary, there's something to be said for a well-designed app like this. There's no learning curve here, it's easy and, frankly, it's just fun. Oh yeah, it's totally free, too. (Download)
Foursquare (Symbian): Mobile check-in service Foursquare arrived on Symbian smartphones (Nokia) this month with a version that's comporable to those on other platforms like Android and iPhone. It even includes a homescreen widget showing the most recent check-ins from your friends. (Download)
